This evening is to celebrate the visit to Paris of 2 of our long-time favorite authors and critics, Carla Harryman & Barrett Watten. It is also to celebrate the 2025 publications by Barrett of ZONE (Chax Press) and Biswamit Dwibedy’s Erode (Litmus Press) as well as Carla’s recent performances of her trilogy work begun in spring 2020 during sequestration, (Good Morning, Cloud Cantata, and “Scales for the Living”).

Barrett Watten is a poet, critic, and editor of “newer” American poetries from the 1970s to the present; author of Frame (1971–1990); Bad History; Progress/Under

; co-author of Leningrad: American Writers in the Soviet Union and The Grand Piano: An Experiment in Collective Autobiography; editor of This and co-editor of Poetics Journal; author of acclaimed critical works such as Total Syntax; The Constructivist Moment (René Wellek Prize); and Questions of Poetic: Language Writing and Consequences; subject of the edited volume Barrett Watten: Contemporary Poetics as Critical Theory (Aerial 8); and Professor of English at Wayne State University. Tonight he will be celebrating and signing copies of his new book, Zone, about which his publisher at Chax Press, Charles Alexander, writes: “Barrett Watten's concept of "zone"—from his current collection Zone: correlations (1973 2021)— has many sources. One extends back to his boyhood in Taiwan, a zone of its own, poised between China and Japan, with sea all around. That early space between has a bearing on his lifelong exploration of zones of thought, zones of language, zones of conflict. As a poet, he emerges out of Robert Creeley, Ted Berrigan, Joanne Kyger, and Anselm Hollo, onward to Robert Grenier and Clark Coolidge, Gertrude Stein and Louis Zukofsky, and into community with the Language poets and their theoretical biographies around a Grand Piano. Carla Harryman  is a poet, experimental prose writer, essayist, performance writer


and collaborator in multi-disciplinary performance. She is known for her boundary breaking investigations of genre, non/narrative poetics, and text-based performance that begin in early publications such as Under the Bridge (This Press, 1980) and three volumes of selected writings Animal Instincts: Prose Plays and Essays (This Press, 1989), There Never Was a Rose without a Thorn (City Lights, 1995), and Various Devices, a capacious en face edition in Russian and English (Polyphem, 2024).  She is the recipient of numerous awards including an artist award in poetry from the Foundation of Contemporary Art, New York; a grant (with Erling Wold) from Opera America: Next Stage; an NEA Consortium Playwright Commission;  an Alexander Gerbode Foundation award in poetry, and a Headlands Center for the Arts Residency.  Her work has been translated into many languages, including multiple publications in French and Russian.  Her essays, poetry, prose, and plays have been represented in over thirty national and international anthologies. In 2018 her work was the focus of a two-day Poets and Critics Symposium at Université Paris 7 Denis Diderot. On the occasion of the symposium, L’Impromptu de Hannah/Hannah Cut In, a  score for speaking voices and manual typewriters used as musical instruments, was published in a bi-lingual edition by joca seria with translation by Abigail Lang. Hannah Cut In premiered at University Art Museum, Berkeley in 2017. Biswamit Dwibedy was born in Odisha, India and now lives in Paris, France. We are


celebrating tonight his 2025 publications of Erode (Litmus Press, 2025) and a book of essays, Hundred Greatest Love Songs, which was just published by Penguin Random House, India, 2025 (not yet available in Europe). He also translates from Hindi and Oriya and his poems have been translated into French. Dwibedy pairs his writing with a visual arts practice. He’s been an artist-in-residence in France, India, and Iceland, and he currently directs the new MFA in creative writing at The American University of Paris where he has been teaching in the Department of Comparative Literature and English since 2019. He has also taught creative writing and arts practice at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design, and Technology in Bangalore, India. He is also the founder and editor of Anew Print, a small press that publishes limited-edition chapbooks from writers in India and abroad. He is the author of eight collections of poetry, published in India and the United States, including: Ancient Guest (HarperCollins India, 2017), Hundred Greatest Love Songs (Penguin Random House), Hubble Gardener (Spuyten Duyvil, 2018), and the chapbooks Eirik’s Ocean (Portable Press), MC3 (Essay Press, 2018) and Film of Dust (Sputnik & Fizzle).
