Mary Ellen Gallagher moved to Paris years ago from Denver, where she’d she specialized in marketing and public relations, ran her own PR firm serving clients as diverse as the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund & the World Bank. Now she is completing her MFA in fiction at Lesley University. A writer of prose (for which she has won awards in France, the USA & Australia) & memoir, she will be delighting us with a series of works written in metros this spring.

Elisa McCool, editor in chief of Come Hither magazine, hails from Austin, TX but has been living in Paris for 2 years. Her work has appeared in Skanky Possum & in broadside form for the Parvati Press Cross-Quarter reading series. She taught a poetry workshop in a men's prison in Iowa, & next year will join the MFA program in poetry at the University of Michigan. Don’t miss this chance to hear her work!

Jonathan Regier is the author of the forthcoming Three Years From Upstate (Six Gallery Press, October 2008: www.sixgallerypress.com) & is hard at work on a new collection based on Tristan & Iseult. His work combines elements of storytelling with poetry. This will be his first reading in Paris! Poet & visual artist

Christine Herzer is working on her MFA in poetry at Bennington College, Vermont. She has studied with Michael Burkard & Timothy Liu. She is currently in Paris to work on an artist book, & will be sharing new works with us.

Jennifer K Dick, author of the book Fluorescence, the chapbook Retina / Rétine & eBook Enclosures will read from new work in progress. She teaches at École Polytechnique & Lille III. Jen co-organizes IVY Writers with Michelle Noteboom. They will be reading together alongside Roberta Vellevé & Margo Berdeshevsky the 2nd of June at Shakespeare & Co , 37 rue de la bucherie Paris 5e.

Laura Mullen teaches at Louisiana State University and is the author of five books: three collections of poetry and two hybrid texts. Her most recent book is the hybrid text murder mystery, Murmur (Futurepoem 2007), preceded by Subjet (U of CA), Tales of Horror (Kelsey St), After I was Dead (U of GA) and The Surface (U of IL, National Poetry Series Winner, 1991). She has been awarded Ironwood's Stanford Prize, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Rona Jaffe Award, among other honors. Recent poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Octopus, 1913, New American Writing, the Denver Quarterly, and elsewhere. Recent prose has been collected in Civil Disobediences: Poetics & Politics in Action (Coffeehouse Press), and Paraspheres (Omnidawn).

Bénédicte Vilgrain édite & imprime (avec Bernard Rival), et traduit (Susan Howe, George Oppen, Paul de Man, Walter Benjamin, Paul Celan, Maître Eckhart…) au Théâtre Typographique (éditeur, Courbevoie) depuis 1984. Dernier ouvrage paru : Oskar Pastior, 21 Poèmes-anagrammes d'après Hebel, annotés et traduits en collaboration avec Frédéric Forte. Depuis 2001, elle publie chez contrat maint, en revues ou collectif, un montage de traductions (généralement du tibétain) qu'elle intitule: Une Grammaire tibétaine.Prochain volume à paraître : Ngà, Héros-Limite, Genève, 2009.

Auteur de romans, de nouvelles et de poésie (Martebelle, roman, Le seuil, 2008 ; Les Tabor, roman, Stock, 2006 ; La vie rêvée de Paul Averroès, roman, Denoël, 2001 ; Valse noire, folio Gallimard, 2002 ; Dernières nouvelles de Monsieur Néant, Obsidiane, 2003 par exemples, et à paraître: L’animal, poésie Flammarion, 2009) ayant marqué la littérature française, Emmanuel Moses grandit à Cachan, puis à Paris lorsque ses parents décident d'habiter Jérusalem en 1969. De cette enfance, il garde le goût d'une culture cosmopolite, traduisant l'hébreu et l'allemand avec aisance. Après des études d'histoire à l'Université Hébraïque, il s'établit à Paris en 1986 où il exerce différents métiers dans la communication : animateur d'une association culturelle, éditeur et journaliste. 1989 est l'année de parution de son premier roman, 'Un homme est parti', 'Papernik' en 1992. Il innove par des poésies où les vers prennent une forme nouvelles, comme avec 'Opus 100’ en 1996 et 'Présent' en 1999. Margo Berdeshevsky, née à New York, vit à Paris est collagiste, photographe et auteur de BUT A PASSAGE IN WILDERNESS (The Sheep Meadow Press, 2007--poésie). Son receuil de nouvelles, “Beautiful Soon Enough”, vient de recevoir le Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize, et paraitra chez FC2 en 2009. Son roman, Vagrant, paraitra aux Etats-Unis avec Red Hen Press.D’autres textes ont été publiés dans les revues Chelsea, Nimrod, Poetry International, The Literary Review, Frank, Indiana Review, Van Gogh's Ear, Runes, Rattapallax, ACM, Southern California Anthology, Many Mountains Moving, 100 Poets Against the War, Pharos, Short Fuse, Bamboo Ridge, Tears in the Fence, Upstairs at Duroc.. Emmanuel Moses was born in 1959 in Casablanca, Morocco. After a childhood spent in Paris, his family immigrated to Israel in 1969. He received a degree in history and moved to Paris in 1986 where he is an active writer, poet and editor. His awards include the Prix Max-Jacob, the Prix Jean-Malrieu, and the Prix-Nelly Sachs. Among his many books in French are, Martebelle, novel, Le seuil, 2008 ; Les Tabor, novel, Stock, 2006 ; Figure rose, poems, Flammarion, 2006 (Prix Ploquin-Caunan de l’Académie Française) ; La danse de la poussière dans les rayons du soleil, a novel (1999) ; and Le present, poems (1999). L’animal, his next collection of poems, is forthcoming with Flammarion in 2009. He is also known for translating from Hebru and German, in particular the works of Peter Huchel, David Vogel, and Yehouda Amichaï, but has also translated numerous American authors, such as Raymond Carver, or C.K. Williams. He currently lives in Paris. He has a few books translated into English, such as “Last News Of Mr. Nobody: Selected Poems” in which Moses writes, "Yellow, the afternoons at his grandparents'/Yellow, his first kiss/Yellow, a certain nineteenth of June/Yellow, the slight and reflexive words of his poems."

Margo Berdeshevsky is the author of BUT A PASSAGE IN WILDERNESS (The Sheep Meadow Press, 2007) & her fiction collection “Beautiful Soon Enough”, has just been chosen as the winner of the Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize, forthcoming with FC2 in fall 2009. Eric Suchère, né en 1967. Il enseigne l'histoire et la théorie des arts à l'école supérieure d'art et de design de Saint-Etienne, est membre du comité de rédaction d'Action Poétique. Jerome Rothenberg is the author of over seventy books of poetry including Poems for the Game of Silence (2000), Collaborations: Livres d’artiste 1968-2003 (2003), Poland/1931, A Seneca Journal, Vienna Blood, That Dada Strain, New Selected Poems 1970-1985 (1986), Khurbn, and most recently, A Paradise of Poets and A Book of Witness (all from New Directions). Kenneth Rexroth said: "Jerome Rothenberg is one of the truly contemporary American poets who has returned U.S. poetry to the mainstream of international modern literature. At the same time he is a true auctochthon. Only here and now could have produced him -- a swinging orgy of Martin Buber, Marcel Duchamp, Gertrude Stein, and Sitting Bull. No one writing poetry today has dug deeper into the roots of poetry." Describing his own poetry career as "an ongoing attempt to reinterpret the poetic past from the point of view of the present," Jerome Rothenberg has also edited seven major assemblages of traditional and contemporary poetry: Technicians of the Sacred (tribal and oral poetry from Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania), Shaking the Pumpkin (traditional American Indian poetry), America a Prophecy (a radical revision of the poetries of the North American continent co-edited with George Quasha), Revolution of the Word (American experimental poetry between the two world wars), A Big Jewish Book (subtitled "Poems & Other Visions of the Jews from Tribal Times to the Present"), and Poems for the Millennium (two volumes, co-edited with Pierre Joris). He has also published a number of plays and essays, has translated a wide range of poets from German and Spanish. His own work has been translated into French, for example Poems for the Game of Silence, has appeared in French, Swedish and Flemish editions, Un livre de témoignage appeared in French in 2002, & he is currently in France celebrating a new translation with a series of readings alongside Yves di Manno. At one point in his life, Rothenberg was the theorist of the deep image group of poets. He has received most of the awards one can think of, fellowships to residencies, etc, and was even elected to the World Academy of Poetry (UNESCO) in 2001. IVY WRITERS invites you to come out and hear Alice NOTLEY, author of 26 books, Pulitzer Prize finalist, winner of the 2007 Academy of American Poets’ Lenore Marshall Award & once partaker in the 2nd generation of the so-called NY School of poets. She will read alongside French poet and performer Virgine POITRASSON, whose most recent collection, Demi-valeurs, just came out with Attente éditions!

BIOS :
ALICE NOTLEY was born in Bisbee, Arizona, on November 8, 1945, and grew up in Needles, California, in the Mohave Desert. She was educated at Barnard College and at The Writers Workshop, University of Iowa. During the late 60s and early 70s she lived a traveling poet’s life (San Francisco, Bolinas, London, Wivenhoe, Chicago) before settling on New York’s Lower East Side. For sixteen years there, she was an important force in the eclectic second generation of the so-called New York School of poetry. Notley, who now lives in Paris, is the author of more than twenty-five books of poetry including At Night the States, the double volume Close to Me and Closer . . . (The Language of Heaven) and Désamère, and How Spring Comes, which was a co-winner of the San Francisco Poetry Awardø. Her epic poem The Descent of Alette was published by Penguin in 1996, followed by Mysteries of Small Houses (1998), which was one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry. Notley’s long poem Disobedience won the Griffin International Prize in 2002 . In 2005 the University of Michigan Press published her book of essays on poetry, Coming After. Notley recently edited The Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan (University of California Press), with her sons Anselm Berrigan and Edmund Berrigan as co-editors. Her most recent books are Alma, or The Dead Women, from Granary Books; Grave of Light: New and Selected Poems, from Wesleyan, and winner of the Academy of American Poets’ Lenore Marshall Award; and In the Pines, from Penguin.

VIRGINIE POITRASSON (née en 1975, vit à Paris), écrivain, traductrice, plasticienne et performeuse, explore les frontières entre les genres et les modes d'expression langagiers et plastiques (sons, vidéos, sérigraphie…). Elle est l'auteur d’Épisodes de la lueur (L'Atelier du Hanneton, 2004) et de Série ombragée (Propos2 éditions, 2006) et Demi-valeurs (2008 aux éditions de l’Attente). Ses textes ont été publiés en français et en anglais dans des revues littéraires en France et à l'étranger, notamment : Action poétique, Poésie-espace public (Le Bleu du ciel), Triages, Aufgabe, Upstairs at Duroc, Décharge, La Polygraphe, Ouste, Boxon, Compresse, Le Foudulire, ainsi que dans des catalogues d’exposition, comme XX primeur, consacré à la gravure contemporaine, (URDLA, centre international de l'estampe).En tant que performeuse, elle a été invitee dans de nombreux festivals en France et aux États-unis: In/Out Poetry, performance video et sonore, Théâtre de la Comédie, Saint Etienne, (2007), Expoésie, festival de poésie sonore, Périgueux (avec comme invités: John Giorno, Henri Chopin, Julien Blaine, 2006), TEXT/styles, performance bilingue, Bowery Poetry Club, New York (2005), Winds, collaboration avec la plasticienne Vicky Colombet, Haim Chanin Fine Arts gallery, New York (2004) et Les dix mots font la fête, festival de la langue française et de la francophonie, lecture, Lyon (2003), entre autres. En 2007, elle a présenté à New York (Galapagos Art Space, The Tank), Caen et Lyon, Salle d’eau, une performance (danse-vidéo-lecture) avec Olivier Gabrys (danseur chorégraphe) et Alice Robert (vidéo-actrice). Elle a été invité également au Centre d'études poétiques, ENS Lyon, à la Galerie EOF (éditions Le Bleu du ciel) et à l’Espace Agora-Tête d’or, à Lyon en 2007. Elle traduit des poètes américains comme Charles Bernstein, Lyn Hejinian, Shanxing Wang, ou Michael Palmer. Sa traduction de Slowly (Lentement) de Lyn Hejinian est parue chez Format Américain en 2007. Elle a co-organisée avec Sarah Riggs les soirées de poésie trilingues (anglais, arabe, français) Lettre : L'autre (I/II), au Point Éphémère, et à l’Institut du Monde Arabe en 2006-2007.Cet automne, elle a été invitée à la Maison des écrivains dans le cadre du cycle « PARIS-TIRET-U.S.A. » pour une journée de traduction.
