have the pleasure of celebrating the publication of Barbara Tomash's new book Arboreal in the presence of her publisher, Ed Smallfield of Apogee Press, and of hearing Rob Halpern’s collaborative work with French musician Christian Passera. Lastly, to accompany the poetry soirée, we will have the great honor of getting to hear visiting musician Ed Masuga who is an American singer-songwriter from Berkeley, California. BARBARA TOMASH: is the author of three books of

poetry: Arboreal (Apogee Press 2014), The Secret of White (Spuyten Duyvil, 2009), and Flying in Water, which won the 2005 Winnow First Poetry Award. Her poems have appeared in Colorado Review, New American Writing, Verse, VOLT, Witness, and many other journals. She lives in Berkeley, California, and teaches creative  writing at San Francisco State University.

 

JODY POU: Après avoir effectué des études de littérature aux États-Unis, Jody Pou vient en France suivre des cours de chant. Titulaire du premier prix de chant lyrique du Conservatoire de Paris, elle remporte plusieurs prix internationaux en chant baroque, avant d’amorcer une carrière tournée vers le répertoire contemporain. Elle est l'auteur de Will (Les Petits Matins, Paris, 2009) et de I thought j'irais en bloom (Le bleu du ciel, Bordeaux, 2014.) // ENGLISH: Jody Pou has lived between the US and France for many years. After receiving a first prize in singing from the Paris conservatory where, she studied Lyric and Baroque music, she began a career as a soprano soloist. She has won prizes in international competitions and sung with many ensembles throughout Europe and the US. She is the author

ROB HALPERN: is the author of Rumored Place (Krupskaya 2004), Disaster Suites (Palm Press 2009), and most recently, Music for Porn (Nightboat Books 2011). Ugly Duckling Presse will publish Common Place later this year, concluding an imagined tetralogy. Together with Taylor Brady, he also co-authored the book length poem Snow Sensitive Skin (Displaced Press 2011). Rob’s translations of Georges Perec’s early essays on aesthetics and politics can be found in various journals, including Review of Contemporary Fiction, and will appear as a collection in 2016 (Nightboat Books). He lives in San Francisco and Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he teaches at Eastern Michigan University and Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility. Ed Masuga is an American singer-songwriter from Berkeley, California. His music is characterized by acoustic guitar fingerpicking and a strong, mellifluous vocal style. Best known for his intricate guitar work, Masuga accompanies himself on piano, banjo, ukulele, mandolin, and harmonica. He has released three independent albums: "Ed Masuga" (2006), "Lonely Dog" (2008), and "Let Me Tune My Heartstrings" (2010). QUI a dit SPECTACLE? SPECTACULAIRE? Mais OUI, Mardi le 4 juin 2013 sera une soirée spectaculabuloussupercalifragilisticexpialidocious--c'est-à-dire, une soirée remplie de belles surprises! Donc ne manquez pas de venir pour écouter VALERIE COULTON et EDWARD SMALLFIELD (auteurs américains qui habitent barcelone, en Espagne) et de voir une performance par l'actrice française CAROLE PEREIRA. Cette pièce "L'AMELIORATION" est une création originelle basée sur une pièce du poète et dramaturge français DAVID LESCOT, mise en scène par Catriona Laing.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION: Ivy Writers Paris SPECIAL event PERFORMANCE AND POETRY NIGHT with a ONE-ACT play performance of AMELIORATION by Carole Pereira, directed by Catriona Laing this is an ORIGINAL CREATION based on a play written by well-known French poet and dramaturge David Lescot. This performance will be paired with great readings by two authors coming to us from their home in Barcelona, Spain: American author and Apogee press publisher Edward Smallfield and by American poet and publisher Valerie Coulton.

J.L. Pérignac au Théâtre de la Coupe d'Or et à Poitiers où elle dirigea une compagnie pendant trois ans. Elle a travaillé avec J.P. Berthomier, Eric Bergeonneau, Eric Chaussebourg avec qui elle a monté des textes comme La Femme Seule de Franca Rame, Barrouf à Chioggia de Goldoni, Don Juan revient de Guerre d'Horvath, Roberto Zucco de Koltès ou Les Co-épouses de Fatima Gallaire... A Paris, elle suit les cours de Martine Harmel au théâtre de la Danse, de J.L. Martinelli aux Amandiers, de Laurence Roy, et intègre la Compagnie du Cheval Noir pour y interpréter des personnages d'hommes et de femmes: Nora dans l'Ombre de la Vallée de Synge, Smirnov dans L'Ours de Tchekhov, John dans l'Usine de Dahlström... Elle a également fait de nombreux travaux de recherche autour du théâtre d'Ibsen, de Camus et de Genet; elle s'oriente maintenant vers des écritures dramaturgiques plus contemporaines et participe à des projets cinématographiques.

EDWARD SMALLFIELD est l'auteur des recueils The Pleasures of C, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (une collaboration avec Doug MacPherson), locate (une collaboration avec Miriam Pirone), equinox, et, recemment, lirio (une collaboration avec Valerie Coulton). Ses poèmes ont également apparu dans nombreuses revues, notamment  alice blue, Barcelona INK, bird dog, e-poema.eu, Five Fingers Review, New American Writing, Páginas Rojas, Parthenon West Review, 26, Wicked Alice, .... Catriona Laing, metteure en scène, fait du théâtre depuis l’âge de 7 ans et elle se forme au jeu d’acteur dans des compagnies à Nantes. Elle continue à Paris en suivant les cours de théâtre de texte avec Philippe Dormoy à l’école du Samovar. Elle s’intéresse à d’autres formes artistiques et ainsi elle intègre l’école du cirque Annie Fratellini. Elle pratique les claquettes depuis des années et se forme aussi à la danse contemporaine. Catriona Laing explore les divers champs de la création théâtrale, du jeu d'acteur à la mise en scène, en passant par la conception et la manipulation de marionnettes. Elle apprend la lumière et la production. Elle suit aussi un master en mise en scène et dramaturgie, ce qui lui permet de travailler auprès de différents metteurs en scène (Olivier Werner, David Lescot, Aurélia Guillet, Georges Lavaudant, Philippe Adrien). Depuis 2006 elle crée et met en scène des spectacles de théâtre pour la compagnie Whisky Time. Elle met en scène « les Présidentes » de Werner Schwab en 2007, « L'amélioration » d'après David Lescot, et prépare actuellement un projet sur Violette Leduc.

Né en 1971, David Lescot est auteur, musicien et metteur en scène. Il met en scène ses pièces : Les Conspirateurs (1999, TILF, Paris), L’association (2002, Théâtre de l’Aquarium, Paris) et L’amélioration (2004, Théâtre du Rond-Point, Paris). David Lescot participe à de nombreux festivals consacrés aux textes contemporains. Parallèlement, il enseigne les études théâtrales à l'Université Paris X (Nanterre) depuis 1999. Son écriture comme son travail scénique cherchent à intégrer d'autres formes au théâtre, en particulier la musique. En tant que musicien, il compose de nombreuses musiques de scène (Troïlus et Cressida de Shakespeare, Le Fou d’Elsa d’après Aragon; Le Bleu du Ciel d’après Georges Bataille et Bernard Noël). Il est le trompettiste du groupe afro-slave Bengflo. Il obtient en 2008 le Prix Nouveau Talent de la SACD, et le Grand Prix de littérature dramatique pour l'Européenne. Ses textes sont publiés aux Éditions Actes Sud-Papiers. Il est nominé aux Molière 2009 dans la catégorie «Révélation Théâtrale» pour La Commission centrale de l'enfance. En 2012, il met en scène Le système de Ponzi  et Les Jeunes au théâtre des Abesses à Paris.

CAROLE PEREIRA is a French actress and literature teacher. She plays Pascal in "l'Amélioration" a one-woman show based on a play by David Lescot. Carole Pereira trained with J.L. Pérignac at the Théâtre de la Coupe d'Or in Poitiers where she directed her own company for 3 years.  Having played many classic stage roles, she is currently exploring contemporary theatre and has also acted in a few short films and is looking into longer cinema projects.

Catriona Laing, DIRECTOR,  has been involved with theater since she was 7 and studied theater in an acting company in Nantes. In Paris, she studied under Philippe Dormoy at l’école du Samovar. Then she got involved with the l’école du cirque Annie Fratellini and tap danced for many years, as well as doing modern dance. Currently, Catriona Laing is exploring  the diverse fields of theater creation from directing and acting to puppet theater, light production while completing a Master in Directing and theater studies. Since 2006 she

has been creating and directing shows for Whisky Time. She directed « les Présidentes » by Werner Schwab in 2007, « L'amélioration » by David Lescot which is being presented in a different format here, and she is also currently working on a project on Violette Leduc

David Lescot is a young French contemporary playwrite and poet whose theater works have made the rounds of Europe and who was even nominated for a Molière award in 2009 in the discovery category. His play "L’Européenne", (published by Actes Sud-papiers, 2007), won the Grand prix for dramatic literature 2008. L’Européenne, directed by the author, was created at the Comedy Theatre, Reims, in May 2009, then played at the Napoliteatro festival in Naples, the Théâtre de la Ville Paris, the TNBA Bordeaux, the Grand Theatre Nantes, the Union Theatre Limoges, the Halle aux Grains Blois.
