Christine Herzer: is a visual artist, poet and teacher. Having lived, worked and studied in different cultures [France, USA, India, Germany] and environments [corporate marketing, higher education, spirituality, art/performance] she draws on a multitude of experience in developing her works and programs. Her artworks have been exhibited in Paris at La Cité des Arts Internationale, Galerie Evi Gougenheim/Artplace, Gallery Grace Teshima, and the Gallery Arnaud Lefebvre. 'Gefuehlspakete 2016', a gift-set of 'feelings' in various containers is currently on display at UP ART Gallery in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany.

Herzer is the author of two chapbooks of poetry: 'i cheated on Chanel N°5' [Dancing Girl Press, 2013], and 'i wanted to be a pirate' [h_ngm-n eBooks, 2009]. Her writing appears in numerous literary journals, art reviews and online publications such as Fence, The Offending Adam, The Volta, Aesthetica Magazine, Drunken Boat, Blackbox Manifold, and The New York Quarterly. She holds an MFA in Poetry from Bennington College.

Working across mediums [drawing, video, language-objects, installation, workshop], her practice employs accumulation and gestures of 'over-layering', 'covering up', 'erasing', 'interrupting' and 'complicating' in order to address/process questions of invisibility and meaning -- in other words, love:

How to make visible loss and feeling? What is the role of containers in protecting/exposing/shaping meaning? Do feelings expire? How to cultivate 'flow' in one's practice?

Herzer 's 'Language Objects', for example, is a series of toasted breads covered in paint, embroidered, or written on with a marker, which invite visitors to contemplate what is meant to nourish us.

In 2012, she was awarded a visual arts fellowship from Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral for La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She served as Guest Lecturer at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad (India, 2011-2013) and was Scholar-in-Residence at Symbiosis School of Liberal Arts, Pune (India, 2013), where she taught Creative Writing to undergraduates. Her essay 'Against Knowing' provides background on her artistic calling. Recently, Herzer has been leading Creative Writing Workshops in Germany in variety of settings including academic institutions, medical centres, and art spaces.

She is currently making 'Written Drawings' . In her own words: I wanted to see words contending for meaning. I wanted to find out if i could use my handwriting [=the body] to transform language into feeling, or rather, I wanted to keep writing to see what would happen if I gave up resisting moving forward.

The TRELEX Poet-in-Residence position marks a period of transition for Herzer. She will be going from intense art-making into a period of generating new writing, as well as transcribing and arranging the works, processes & concerns made/observed & collected in Germany over past two years. Her research-related workshops will continue at the Goethe Institute in Paris where she will be leading a writing lab. She also has plans to host writing sessions at Berkeley Books and looks forward to connecting with Paris-based poets, philosophers and artists.

'Ich fuehle anders/Je me sens autre' (2016)

Christine Herzer : Artiste et Poète est en résidence au TRELEX Paris poète-en-résidence. Trelex est une nouvelle résidence sur invitation qui a pour but de stimuler et fédérer les échanges entre poètes/écrivains basés à Paris.

Parmi ses travaux en cours, les dessins écrits où l'écriture devient un lieu de tensions et de libération et puis la participation à 'Material Girls' à UP ART Gallerie à Neustadt an der Weinstrasse [Allemagne]. Cette exposition regroupera les oeuvres de femmes artistes utilisant leurs matériaux fétiches ou de prédilection. Christine y exposera 'Gefuehlspakete 2016', une oeuvre issue de ses recherches sur les mots signifiant des sentiments en allemande et comprenant 10 cartes poèmes sur les sentiments. Ces cartes sont présentées dans des coffrets identifiés par un sentiment, des enveloppes opaques fermés et des pochettes en papier cristal transparent.

La question de contenant traverse l'oeuvre de l'artiste: Ouelle est la place de l'émotion dans une biographie/vie; Où garder/mettre ses sentiments? Pour Christine les gestes 'féminins' sont fondamentaux : 'contenir', ‘couvrir', 'complexifier’, 'superposer', 'subir’, ‘effacer', 'rayer', 'muer'…

En 2009 Elle obtient son Masters of Fine Arts [MFA] à Bennington College dans le Vermont. Elle a écrit deux chapbooks de poésie: 'i cheated on Chanel N°5' [Dancing Girl Press, 2013] et 'i wanted to be a pirate' [h_ngm-n eBooks, 2009] et publie dans de nombreuses revues littéraires américaines et internationales comme Fence, American Letter Commentary, The Volta, The Offending Adam, Aesthetica Magazine [UK], Drunken Boat, Blackbox Manifold et Platform Magazine [Inde]. Un essai publié dans Semour Magazine intitulé "Against Knowing. On the value of fear, desire, change, and paying attention (love)" détaille son parcours atypique.

Elle a obtenu en 2012 une bourse Nationale en Arts Plastiques décernée par Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral, Fondation Culturelle de la Rhénanie- Palatinat, pour La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, endroit propice à sa création. Elle y retourne comme artiste en résidence afin de préparer deux expositions personnelles en 2013 et 2015. 'Scholar in Residence' à Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts à Pune en Inde, elle va enseigner le Creative Writing [2013]. Charlemagne Ganashine : Compositeur, guitariste et chanteur sous l'enseigne de Feu Robertson, Charlemagne Ganashine est également l'artisan de nombreux albums avec d'autres formations telles que Rroselicoeur, Supersoft [14-18] ou encore Breezy Temple. Poète, lecteur, performer et amateur de collages, il est collaborateur de plusieurs revues et l'auteur d'une somme poétique "Grand Rock" (sous le pseudonyme de Charlotte Ganache). Activiste des mondes underground, il fût organisateur de performances telles que les soirées Equilibre Instable ou Sonorama et fondateur du microlabel et collectif artistique Partycul System.

JONATHAN REGIER’s first book of poetry was published by Six Gallery Press (Pittsburgh, PA) in 2008. He’s now toward the end of his PhD in the history and philosophy of science at Université Paris 7, where he also teaches. Recently, his poetry has appeared in journals such as Diagram, Upstairs at Duroc,  or elimae, and his essays and book reviews have appeared in Drunken Boat and the Huffington Post. He has collaborated with authors, dancers and artists. His new chapbook, Rotation, is a limited-edition handmade art object designed and illustrated by SARAH LARIVIERE, published by her imprint, Color Treasury (pictured at right).

JENNIFER K DICK is the author of Circuits (2013), Fluorescence (2004) & the BlazeVox ebook Enclosures (2007) as well as 3 chapbooks.  She lives in France where she teaches at UHA, curates the Ivy Writers Paris bilingual reading series in Paris & co-organizes the Ecrire L'Art French mini-residency in Mulhouse. She is a poetry editor for VERSAL magazine & writes a regular poetics column for Tears in the Fence (UK). JACOB BROMBERG  is a poet, translator, and contributing editor to The White Review. He lives in Paris where he co-organizes the IVY Writers reading series. His work has appeared online and in print as part of the 2012 “Lex-ICON” text and image project in Mulhouse, France. Most recently, he has collaborated with visual artist Camille Henrot, writing the words to her film Grosse fatigue, to be featured at the 2013 Venice Biennale. The translations he will read tonight for IVY Writers Paris are part of a larger project for which he was invited to Rennes with Deborah Heissler this May as part of her writer’s residency.

Mary Ellen Gallagher moved to Paris years ago from Denver, where she’d she specialized in marketing and public relations, ran her own PR firm serving clients as diverse as the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund & the World Bank. Now she is completing her MFA in fiction at Lesley University. A writer of prose (for which she has won awards in France, the USA & Australia) & memoir, she will be delighting us with a series of works written in metros this spring.

Elisa McCool, editor in chief of Come Hither magazine, hails from Austin, TX but has been living in Paris for 2 years. Her work has appeared in Skanky Possum & in broadside form for the Parvati Press Cross-Quarter reading series. She taught a poetry workshop in a men's prison in Iowa, & next year will join the MFA program in poetry at the University of Michigan. Don’t miss this chance to hear her work!

Jonathan Regier is the author of the forthcoming Three Years From Upstate (Six Gallery Press, October 2008: www.sixgallerypress.com) & is hard at work on a new collection based on Tristan & Iseult. His work combines elements of storytelling with poetry. This will be his first reading in Paris! Poet & visual artist

Christine Herzer is working on her MFA in poetry at Bennington College, Vermont. She has studied with Michael Burkard & Timothy Liu. She is currently in Paris to work on an artist book, & will be sharing new works with us.

Jennifer K Dick, author of the book Fluorescence, the chapbook Retina / Rétine & eBook Enclosures will read from new work in progress. She teaches at École Polytechnique & Lille III. Jen co-organizes IVY Writers with Michelle Noteboom. They will be reading together alongside Roberta Vellevé & Margo Berdeshevsky the 2nd of June at Shakespeare & Co , 37 rue de la bucherie Paris 5e.
