Carrie Chappell’s work explores female perspectives as they confront the conflicting nostalgia for and injury perpetuated by Western patriarchal structures in North American and European cultures. Her poetry has appeared in Anastamos, Blue Mesa Review, CALAMITY, Cimarron Review, Cream City Review, FORTH Magazine, Harpur Palate, Juked, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, and The Volta. Her book essays have appeared in The Collagist, Diagram, FANZINE, The Iowa Review, Xavier Review, and Buried Letter Press.

Since completing her Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans’ Creative Writing Workshop in 2013, she has shared her creative and scholarly writing, both in print and in public readings, and has actively sought to engage with and publish critical writing that prolongs the discussion of contemporary female-authored texts. Each April, she curates the Verse of April project, a digital anthology of homage to the poets. Currently, she lives, writes, and teaches in Paris, France, and serves as Poetry Editor for Sundog Lit.

L’œuvre de Carrie Chappell explore des perspectives féminines, face à la nostalgie conflictuelle pour et aux blessures perpétuées par les structures patriarcales occidentales dans les cultures nord-américaine et européenne. Sa poésie a paru dans Anastamos, Blue Mesa Review, CALAMITY, Cimarron Review, Cream City Review, FORTH Magazine, Harpur Palate, Juked, Pittsburgh Poetry Review et The Volta. Après avoir terminé son M.F.A en création littéraire à l'Université de la Nouvelle-Orléans en 2013, elle s’est lancée dans des projets de lecture et de critique qui cherchent activement à prolonger la discussion de textes contemporains rédigés par des femmes. Chaque mois d'avril, elle édit le projet Verse of April, une anthologie numérique de l'hommage aux poètes. Actuellement, elle vit, écrit et enseigne à Paris et travaille en tant que rédactrice de poésie pour Sundog Lit.

Cole Swensen is the author of 17 books of poetry, most recently On Walking On (Nightboat, 2017) and a collection of critical essays, Noise That Stays Noise (U. of Michigan, 2011). Her work has been awarded the Iowa Poetry Prize, the S.F. State Poetry Center Book Award, and the National Poetry Series, and has been a finalist twice for the L.A. Times Book Award and for the National Book Award. A former Guggenheim Fellow, she co-edited the Norton anthology American Hybrid and is the founding editor of La Presse. She has translated over twenty books of French poetry, prose, and art criticism, including Jean Frémon's Island of the Dead, which won the PEN USA Award in Translation. Marie Borel is a traveller, author and translator.
Her first collection was  Fin de citation, (cipM, 1995) translated into English as Close Quote, by Keith Waldrop, Burning Deck, 2001). Followed by Trompe-Loup, (Le bleu du ciel) with the English version Wolftrot, translated by Omar Berrada & Sarah Riggs, (La Presse 2003).
Other collections by Borel include Tombeau des caraïbes (contrat-maint, 2003), Priorité aux canards, (Editions de l’Attente, 2008), Le monde selon Mr Ben, (Fage éditions, 2008), Écrit sur du sable, (contrat-maint, 2008), Le Léopard est mort avec ses taches, (Editions de L’Attente, 2011) and LOIN,  (Editions de l’Attente, 2013). Marie Borel is herself a translator from English and her translated volumes, into French – most of them in collaboration include: Tom Raworth, Sarah Riggs, Rosemarie & Keith Waldrop,  Rosmarie Waldrop, Lisa Jarnot, Dona Stonecipher, Etel Adnan, Cole Svensen.

3ème lecture de la soirée par Cole Swensen, poète américaine et traductrice /// the third reading was by Cole Swensen, American poet and translator, who shared an extract of her essay-poem on Vargas with us:

I, alas, have not got a note of her name but will add it when I do hear back from the other readers of the evening. She got up and shared recent poetry that was read out live from her journal--daring!!!

La cinqième lecture venait d'un écrivain de New York en visite à Paris--Bonny Finberg. Elle nous a lu un extrait de son roman. /// The fifth open mike reader of the evening was visiting from New York City--Bonny Finberg, who shared an extract of fiction with us.

Ensuite, Eldridge Hainsbury, auteure-performeuse et musicienne basée à Paris mais qui vient des Etats-Unis, nous a lu quelques textes /// Next up was the performer-author and musician Eldridge Hainsbury, originally from the States but who is now based in Paris:

La dernière lecture pour la partie "scène ouverte" de notre soirée en hommage à Spoken Word Paris était un Spoken Word organisatrice, la poète Antonia Kliminko /// Our final Open Miker of the night was Paris based poet Antonia Kliminko.

Pour terminer la soirée en beauté, notre poète invité, David Barnes, auteur anglais basé à Paris et organiseur et fondateur de Spoken Word Paris, nous a lu sa poésie. //// And then came time for our fabulous featured event--the wonderful reading of work by David Barnes. David is an organizer and author who has for years given so much to the Paris writing community by founding and keeping Spoken Word Paris running throughout the year, publishing books and magazines as part of the Spoken Word Paris project and even organizing and teaching workshops (often for free!) It was a true pleasure for us to get to really bask in David's writings as we set our sights on the 2018-2019 season of Paris reading.

Based in between Paris and New York City, Jérôme Game is a French author of 9 collections of poems, several CDs of sound poetry, a DVD of videopoems, and 6 volumes of essays. Salle d’embarquement, his first novel, came out last fall (L’Attente, 2017). Also shown in exhibitions as visual/textual installations, his poetry explores the shapes and flows of contemporary experience via those of discourses, narratives and images. Often collaborating with musicians, stage directors, and visual artists for collective performances, he regularly gives public readings of his work in Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Later this year Flip-Book & other poems, a volume of English translations of his work, will come out in London with Barque Press (translated by Barbar Beck, with a preface by Nadja Cohen), and Ovni(s), the play he co-wrote, will premiere at the Avignon Festival in July 2018. www.jeromegame.com

Né en 1959 à Pau, Didier Bourda mène un travail d’écriture qui lui fait rassembler des matériaux hétérogènes, tant géographiques, ethnologiques, anthropologiques, politiques, sociologiques, historiques, linguistiques. De cette pluralité des sources naissent des textes qui fonctionnement par strates dont il s’attache à discerner les glissements. Certains ont parlé « d’une pensée non plus segmentée, atomisée, disjonctive mais profondément reliée, reliante ». Humour, précision dans son décryptage au plus près, au scalpel, une sorte de neutralité dans le regard, sont sa marque de fabrique. Il produit également des objets-video minimalistes avec le designer sonore Martin Antiphon et le plasticien Dimitri Vazemsky. Ce travail le conduit à définir un rapport non carné au texte (projection, écoute au casque) qui privilégie l’anti-spectacle. Quinze années de compagnonnage néanmoins avec la scène, souvent en duo avec l’accordéoniste improvisateur Jesus Aured. Il est Directeur artistique de Poésie dans les chais (64) depuis 2003.

Barbara Beck is a poet and translator. A selection of recent poems appears in women : poetry : migration [an anthology], edited by Jane Joritz-Nakagawa (Theenk Books, New York, 2017). Her translations of poems by Jérome Game appear in Writing the Real: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary French Poetry (Enitharmon Press, London, 2016) and in Flip-Book and Other Poems (Barque Press, forthcoming). She has published translations of work by Vannina Maestri, Dominique Quélen, Emmanuèle Jawad, Tahar Bekri and Cid Corman. Since 2002, she has been editor of Upstairs at Duroc, the English-language journal published in Paris. She will be reading translations of Jérôme Game's work alongside him for this Ivy Writers Paris event.

Née à San Francisco, Cole Swensen partage sa vie entre des États Unis et Paris. Elle a publié quinze livres de poésie ; les plus récents sont Gravesend (2012), Greensward (2010) et Ours (2008) ; Landscapes on a Train apparaitra en automne 2015. Parmi d’autres prix, son travail a gagné deux fois le Pushcart Prize, ainsi que le San Francisco State Poetry Center Book Award, le Iowa Poetry Prize, le New American Writing Award, et le National Poetry Series, et était un finaliste pour le National Book Award et deux fois pour le Los Angeles Times Book Award. DONNA STONECIPHER est l’auteure de quatre livres : The Reservoir (2002), Souvenir de

Yves di Manno est né dans le Rhône en 1954. Il vit et travaille à Paris. Depuis les années 1970, il a collaboré à de nombreuses revues, traduit plusieurs poètes nord-américains (William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, George Oppen, Jerome Rothenberg…) et publié une vingtaine d'ouvrages — parmi lesquels, pour la poésie : Les Célébrations (Bedou, 1980), Champs (Flammarion, 1984-1987), Kambuja (Flammarion, 1992), Partitions (Flammarion, 1995) et Un Pré, chemin vers (Flammarion, 2003). Une nouvelle suite : Terre sienne, paraît en 2012 aux éditions Isabelle Sauvage. Ses récits complets ont été réunis sous le titre de Disparaître (Didier Devillez, 1997). Il est également l'auteur d’un roman fantastique : La Montagne rituelle (Flammarion, 1998), de deux « récits en rêve » : Domicile (Denoël, 2002), Discipline (Ed. Héloïse d’Ormesson, 2005) et de deux traités de poétique active : « endquote » (Flammarion, 1999), Objets d’Amérique (José Corti, 2009). Traducteur sous divers pseudonymes de littérature populaire, responsable de la version française des Techniciens du sacré de Jerome Rothenberg (José Corti, 2008) et de l’édition des Œuvres complètes de Pierre Reverdy, il dirige par ailleurs la collection Poésie/Flammarion, où il a accueilli plus de cent-vingt titres depuis 1994. Il prépare actuellement un nouvel essai de poétique : No man’s land et la troisième édition révisée des Cantos d’Ezra Pound.

 

Cole Swensen is the author of 14 books of poetry, most recently Gravesend (U. of California, 2012) and Stele (Post-Apollo Press, 2012), and a volume of critical essays, Noise That Stays Noise (U. of Michigan Press, 2011). She is the co-editor of the 2009 Norton anthology American Hybrid and the founding editor of La Presse, a very small press that publishes contemporary French writing in English translation. A translator herself, she won the PEN USA Translation Award in 2004 and has published translations of work by Jean Frémon, Suzanne Doppelt, Nicolas Pesquès, Caroline Dubois, and others. A professor of literary arts at Brown University, she divides her life between Providence, RI and Paris.
