IVY Writers Paris 2011-2012 season begins with this POETS-LIVE and VERSAL MAGAZINE all-English reading. Anna Arov, Megan Garr, Sarah Ream, Kate Foley and Jane Lewty—visiting authors & editors of Versal Magazine—will read with award-winning Swedish-Anglophone poet and translator Lars Palm, a POETS-LIVE invitee.


BIOS:
LARS PALM currently lives in Malmö. He has been publishing poems for 20 years & chapbooks for 10 years in Sweden, the USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Italy, Australia & Japan. His first long book road song for was recently published by corrupt press, run by Dylan Harris (an Englishman living in Paris). With his lovely wife Petra he had a photo & poetry exhibition & published two online chapbooks. He translates to & from Swedish, English & Spanish, sometimes as a part of the translators' collective,& now small press, Kompassros. Poems of his have been translated into Spanish & Japanese. He might also say that he runs a small ungovernable press, works way too much for way too little pay, & enjoys cooking & travelling.

MEGAN M GARR (b. 1979) is an American poet and the editor of the widely-acclaimed literary journal Versal (www.versaljournal.org). After just a year in Amsterdam, Megan founded the literary community organization “wordsinhere” in 2002. Activist by nature, her goal was to build a supportive infrastructure for Amsterdam’s then-scattered international writing community. By 2003, the organization boasted writing groups, the monthly literary evening “The Open Stanza” (which moved to Nachttheater Sugar Factory in 2004 and ran until 2007), and the journal Versal. Megan remains at the helm of this entirely self-funded and volunteer-run organization, which continues to support local residents through workshops, seminars and events. In 2010, she was chosen as one of 50 “Power Amsterdammers” by TimeOut Amsterdam.Versal has garnered international attention for its unique visual and literary aesthetic, and was named one of seventeen “Indie Innovator” presses by Poets & Writers Magazine (Nov/Dec 2010): “the most visible product of a passionate group helping to sustain ‘transnational networks’ for writers.” Megan’s own work as well as that through Versal have put Amsterdam on the map of the literary world. Her writings on translocalityhave been informed by years of living abroad, and her community work continues to address the concerns of writers who no longer live among their native languages and literary cultures. These writings have been published in several journals, including a piece inA Megaphone, an international anthology of some 75 works on the subject of feminism and writing, edited by Juliana Spahr and Stephanie Young. Megan was also a featured panelist on translocality at the Prague Microfestival in 2011. Megan’s poetry has been published in the USA and Europe, most recently in Tuesday: An Art Journal, SpringGun,Sidebrow, VLAK, Lungfull!andCorduroy Mtn, and upcoming in Caketrain and Bateau. Her poetry collectionThe Preservationist Documentswas a finalist in several prizes, and won the Pilot Books Meddling Kids Series in 2010. It will be published by Pilot Books this fall.

KATE FOLEY is a widely published prize-winning UK poet whose 5th collection - plus another chapbook -will be out in 2012 from ShoestringPress.

SARAH REAM is a British-born writer and editor. She has lived in the UK, the USA, France and Australia, and has been based in Amsterdam since 2008. She is the managing editor of Versal (www.versaljournal.org), the central editor of Poetry International Web (www.poetryinternational.org) and poetry editor at Polygon (www.polygonbooks.co.uk), the literary imprint of the Edinburgh-based publishing house Birlinn. She also edits fiction and non-fiction books. In the past, she has worked as a bookseller and a freelance arts and restaurant critic. Her poems and articles have appeared in various publications, including the Guardian website, The List, 14 and V, an anthology of international writing from Edinburgh. She holds a Masters in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Edinburgh University.

ANNA AROV is a Canadian/Russian poet who has been living in Holland for eleven years. Anna is one of the poetry editors for literary journal Versal. She organizes the International Room for the Dutch annual poetry festival, Huis van de Poezie. Anna teaches writing at the Dutch Royal Academy of Art as well as poetry workshops at the English Bookshop for wordsinhere and in elementary schools. She has performed throughout Europe and the Netherlands at various festivals and poetry podiums. Anna’s published work includes Observatory, a collection of poems illustrated by Leon M. Dekker, as well as poems in journals, CDs and in combination with exhibited art. This is her second appearance with IVY Writers Paris.

NICOLAS CARRAS : Compositeur, arrangeur, pianiste, artiste sonore et poète. Co-fondateur du groupe sos-art.com. Vient du classique et du Jazz. A l’age de 19 ans il écrit ses premiers poèmes, travail d’écriture qu’il mènera en parallèle de sa recherche musicale, plusieurs recueils à ce jour non publiés, ainsi qu’au travail autour de la poésie. Ancien élève de l’American School of Modern Music, de Peter Giron et de Jeff Gardner. Truong’s work is innovative on the page and is engaged with troubling issues of language and culture. His poems exemplify the issues that are being explored in contemporary American poetry. ..........Nicolas Carras is a video artist, sound artist, photographer, and poet, and a founding member of the Parisian art collective SOS-ART. His work has always impressed me for its originality and for the purity with which he carries out his ideas and approaches. At first glance, his work seems extremely minimal: for example a handheld shot of a curb and part of a sidewalk, with maybe a pair of feet passing through the frame, which is unmoving, and accompanied by only the barest trace of ambient sound. Many of his videos of this nature are of only a few minutes duration, but when several of them are grouped together they very quickly seem to be images, or fragments of an existence, that imply and communicate an enormous emotional content, a content which varies considerably from piece to piece. There is a real life, both a very specific one and a very universal one, inhering in them, and they can be watched again and again, each time acquiring more and more resonance and meaning.
..........His photographs are presented not so much as “photographs” but as frozen moments in a mind; a more extreme, or more pure, form of the kind of expression found in his videos. Their force, like the videos, is more conceptual and emotional than “pictorial”. Carras is not out to please the public; he is creating an experience of what it is like to be, and to experience a certain kind of perception and knowledge of the world and of being in that world.
..........I am very sympathetic to this kind of art, because it is basically what I do myself as a writer and word artist: form a vision of the universe as I experience it, with no regard to whether it “pleases” any given public or not.
..........I think that approach is clear in the collaborations we have done, in which Carras has added my texts and readings of those texts to his videos, using a variety of processes and approaches. Those works remain among my very favorite collaborations. In no way are my texts narratives of his images, nor are his images “illustrations” of my texts. Instead, the two dimensions expand the possibilities of each other in unexpected and fascinating ways. This is true collaboration. It is also important to point out that Carras works in both French and English, and even with some of the texts I wrote in my own invented language of Globbolalia. His texts in French and English treat language not as “literature” but as a visionary or experiential medium much like the images he chooses for his visual work.

Her forthcoming critical book (2012) is Purple Passages: Pound, Eliot, Zukofsky, Olson, Creeley and the Ends of Patriarchal Poetry from University of Iowa Press. For over 20 years her linguistically provocative, philosophically complex wordplay continues to excite audiences worldwide. She has recently been granted the “Exuberance is Beauty” Award for Amuse Bouche and the MPS Mobile Award for being the world’s first “Mobile Poet”, where her work is now on mobile devices (cell phones and smart phones and karaoke apparati throughout the world. Engaged with the art of combination and turbulence of thought, it is a testament to the creative and regenerative power of language and its infinite possibilities for pushing meaning to the limits of its semantic boundaries. Interprète de musique classique et contemporaine, ses interprétations incluent la performance avant-garde Eight Songs for a Mad King de Sir Peter Maxwell Davies et Time and Beyond de Leslie Basset. Son spectacle ‘one-man’ avec des chansons de Kurt Weill a gagne des critiques de quatre etoiles partout dans le monde. Sandy Florian est d'origine Latino-Américaine et l'auteur de cinq livres: On Wonderland & Waste (Sidebrow Press, 2010) Prelude to Air From Water (Elixir Press, 2010), The Tree of No (Action Books, 2008), 32 Pedals & 47 Stops (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2007) and Telescope (Action Books, 2006). Ses textes ont été publiés dans plus que 50 journals à travers le monde et elle a reçu plusieurs prix littéraires. Elle a vecu au Panama, Mexique, Londre, Paris, San Franciso, Denver et actuellement à West Virginia ou elle est professeur.

Eric Houser est né à Lyon, et vit et travaille à Paris. Il a écrit et publié quelques livres de poésie : (le couteau) (contrat maint, Marseille, 2005), Encore vous précédé d’Auto-di-Dax (Les petits matins, Paris, 2006), Mon journal pour Nina (éditions de l’attente, Bordeaux, 2007), Poèmes en langue vulgaire (éditions Action poétique, Paris, 2009). Il écrit régulièrement des chroniques et des critiques pour Action poétique, Cahier Critique de Poésie, et sur sitaudis.fr. Il a traduit des passages de Semiramis if I remember de Keith Waldrop (publiés dans la revue Vacarme, n° 41 en 2007 et n° 46 en 2009) et il y aura quelques traductions en anglais de ses propres textes dans la revue Aufgabe. Le titre de son projet actuel d’écriture est Les souffrances du jeune houser, une sorte de roman en poèmes de 12 lignes chacun.

Baritone Bremner Duthie is equally at home on the opera stage, in music theatre and performing challenging contemporary vocal works. He has sung Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte and Figaro in the Marriage of Figaro. He has performed in Sir Peter Maxwell-Davie’s Eight Songs for a Mad King and Gruber’s Frankenstein!!. He has performed several world and North American premiers of new song cycles and new music theater works. His One-Man show with the songs of Kurt Weill was awarded ‘Outstanding Solo Performance’ at the Ottawa Theatre Festival and ‘Outstanding Musical Production’ at the Winnipeg Theatre Festival. London’s Musical Stages Magazine said: "Bremner Duthie has.... a voice of power and inner beauty that commands the whole space..... It takes more than just an expressive voice to really communicate Kurt Weill songs - it takes love, fear, regrets, wistfulness, loneliness, tragedy and charm. Of Colombian and Puerto Rican descent, writer and scholar Sandy Florian was born in New York and raised in Latin America. She holds an MFA from Brown and a PhD from University of Denver. She is the author of five prose-poetry collections: On Wonderland & Waste (Sidebrow Press, 2010) Prelude to Air From Water (Elixir Press, 2010), The Tree of No (Action Books, 2008), 32 Pedals & 47 Stops (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2007) and Telescope (Action Books, 2006). Her creative work has appeared in over 50 international journals including Bombay Gin, Gulf Coast, /nor, Gargoyle, Indiana Review, and New Orleans Review, and she's been awarded a residency at Caldera Arts, a writer's grant supported residency at the Vermont Studio Center, and an affiliate residency at Headlands Center for the Arts, as well as literary prizes from Elixir Press, New Voices, and Brown University. She has made residence in Panama, Mexico, London, Paris, San Francisco, Denver, and now West Virginia, and her current semi-autobiographical project focuses on the hybridity of generic identities as a reaction to postmodern trauma. She also serves as one of the "other" editors for Tarpaulin Sky Journal.

Philippe Beck,
écrivain de la poésie et de la prose, philosophe, professeur et traducteur, est né en 1963 à Strasbourg et vit à Paris. « Proche en cela des Romantiques allemands, Beck ouvre l’acte poétique au mouvement réflexif infini. »--a écrit Laurent Margantin http://www.oeuvresouvertes.net/spip.php?article230 Cela vient surement de sa recherche à la fois de la littérature et de la philosophie. Puisqu’après une maîtrise de lettres et une agrégation de philosophie, Philippe Beck a soutenu une thèse de doctorat de philosophie (Histoire et imagination) sous la direction de Jacques Derrida. Maître de conférences en Philosophie à l'université de Nantes depuis 1995, il y dispense spécialement des cours dans le domaine de l'esthétique, s'attachant notamment à préciser la différence entre littérature et philosophie. En 1990, il est un membre fondateur de la revue de phénoménologie Alter (ENS de Saint-Cloud). Fondateur et rédacteur en chef de la revue de poésie Quaderno (éd. MeMo, Nantes, de 1998 à 2000), il est l'auteur de nombreux articles de poétologie et de critique. Il est par ailleurs membre du comité de rédaction des revues Cités et Droits de cités (PUF) ainsi que de la revue Agenda de la pensée contemporaine (Flammarion). Son travail de poète ("tenir la langue et tenir à la tenue de la langue" a dit Jean-Luc Nancy) est l'occasion de rencontres et de collaborations avec des musiciens et compositeurs contemporains. Il est le co-auteur du livret de l'opéra Pastorale de Gérard Pesson qui a également mis en musique des poèmes tirés de Chants populaires pour l'ensemble vocal Accentus. En 2009, a été créée une Oeuvre acousmatique de Philippe Mion d'après Lyre Dure. Régulièrement invité en France et dans le monde pour des lectures de son oeuvre et des conférences, il a été, en 2008, écrivain en résidence au Château de Blandy-les-Tours et, en 2009, lauréat de la "Mission Stendhal" en Chine. En tant que poète, il figure au sommaire de nombre de revues et anthologies. Certains de ses livres et poèmes ont été traduits en anglais, néerlandais, coréen, galicien, allemand. A Laurent Margantin de terminer : « En l’occurrence la dimension « didactique » de cette écriture inverse les positions : la poésie n’est pas de la « pré-philosophie » qui demanderait à s’achever dans le philosophème. Au contraire, l’acte didactique en poésie permet un mode de pensée poétique qui incorpore et re-densifie la réflexion philosophique qui sombrerait vite dans le discours jargonnant. Guy Bennett est écrivain, traducteur, éditeur, professeur et « musicien dans une vie antérieure ». Il est également l’auteur de plusieurs recueils de poésie, notamment : Last Words (Los Angeles: Sun & Moon Press, 1998); The Row (Los Angeles: Seeing Eye Books, 2000); One Hundred Famous Views (Atlanta: 108.93, 2001); 32 Snapshots of Marseilles (Corvallis, Oregon: Sacrifice Press, 2010) ainsi que d’ouvrages de non-poésie, et de nombreuses traductions, notamment la collaboration bilingue (en anglais et italien) Drive to Cluster (ML & NLF, italie 2003), qui a été écrit avec l'artiste Ron Griffin ; avec Béatrice Mousli, Poésies des deux mondes : un dialogue franco-américain à travers les revues littéraires, 1850-2004 (2004), Charting the Here of There: French & American Poetry in Translation in Literary Magazines, 1850-2002 avec John Ashbery et Seeing Los Angeles: A Different Look at a Different City avec Béatrice Mousli. Philippe Beck, born on 21 April 1963 in Strasbourg, studied literature and philosophy at the University of Nantes. As a poet, he made his debut in 1996 at the age of thirty-two with the collection Garde-manche hypocrite (Hypocritical Oversleeve). In 2003, a thoroughly revised version of it appeared, with the title Garde-manche Deux (Oversleeve Two). During the seven years between the two versions, the author published no less than nine collections of poetry; since then, many more have appeared. If you add the extensive intellectual biography Beck l’impersonnage (Beck the Impersonality, 2006) to this list, you cannot avoid the feeling that—according to John Fenoghen (tr John Irons) that “you are dealing with a really single-minded person.
